Bird Watching in Spain: guided birding in Castile and Leon

By AIDA ACITORES,

Spain is one of the most interesting countries for birding lovers because of its geographical situation: the Iberian Peninsula is a bridge between the European continent and Africa

Hundreds of species of birds choose Spain as nesting and reproduction habitat. And one of the best places for Bird Watching in Spain is Castile and Leon, the largest region of the country, with important natural sites and an amazing wildlife.

In provinces like Palencia exists great wetlands, like the Natural Reserve of Villafáfila, Sanabria Lake (Zamora) and  The Nava Lagoon (Palencia), located near to Finca El Cercado.

BIRD WATCHING IN SPRING IN PALENCIA, SPAIN

The Nava Lagoon is an exceptional place for Bird Watching, especially inspring, when the bird migration takes place. From March to May, birds start their migration, looking for their reproduction habitats. In that season it is possible to watch Great Ringed Plovers, avocets, Red Knots,Whimbrels, Black Terns, Redshanks or Spoonbills, or several species of smaller birds, like cliff‐chaff, Spectacled Warbler or Flycatcher.

One of the most wonderful shows of the Nature in La Nava Lagoon is the courtship rituals of some species of birds: the nuptial flight of the Mash Harriers; the breeding colonies built in the flooded areas by Purple Herons, Black‐winged Stilts or Mallards; the sing of Bearded Tits…

More than 300 species of birds have been detected in Palencia, as website www.avespalencia.org informs.

THE GREAT BUSTARD

The Nava Lagoon and other natural districts in Palencia, like El Cerrato, are great places to watch Great Bustards. In fact, Castile and Leon has the largest population of Great Bustards in Europe: between 14,000 and 16,000 individuals.

The reason for its abundance is the agricultural character of Castile and Leon: the bulky Great Bustards – the largest bird in the Iberian birdlife and one of the heaviest flying birds – usually inhabit the plains sown to cereal. In springtime it is possible to watch the spectacular courtship rituals, known as “wheels”: the Great Bustard males gather in a particular area for a colorful courting and attract females.
